Ted N. Talbot, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Ted N. Talbot, 85, passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Pen Bay medical center in Rockport, his wife and daughter at his side.
Born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. Ted spent his early years in the Calais area before his family relocated to Rockland during his high school years.
It was at Rockland High School where Ted’s fighting spirit first emerged in the boxing ring, where his tenacity earned him the nickname, Toughie Talbot, a testament to his resilient character and his determined spirit.
After graduating, Ted embarked on his first adventure attending x-ray school in Boston. Living on historic Beacon Hill, he embraced city life, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Service to his country called next and Ted enlisted in the US Army spending over two years stationed in France.
Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the midcoast taking a position as a delivery driver with Sutton Supply Company. On one seemingly routine delivery to FMC/Marine Colloids, Ted met Shirley Swanson. The pair were married in July 1965, beginning a partnership that would span 60 years.
The newlyweds started their life together in South Thomaston, where they welcomed their daughter Lynn in 1966. Soon after Ted was driving around Owls Head and saw a homemade ‘for sale’ sign at the end of a driveway. He purchased their forever home on beloved Ash Point Drive, in Owls Head, where they have since resided.
Ted’s professional journey led him through various positions with different companies including Sutton Supply, Grossmans, Atwood Brothers, and finally the Maine State Ferry Service, where he served as a purchaser and warehouse manager for many years before retiring.
While at Atwood Brothers, Ted drove a delivery truck to Massachusetts and Connecticut, occasionally joined by his young daughter Lynn, who delighted in listening to his CB radio banter, going by the handle “Teddy Bear”. 10-4 Teddy Bear.
In his younger years, Ted was a dedicated participant in a men’s ice hockey league playing on the Seahawks-- #5, Center.
As an avid cyclist, Ted rode impressive distances including multiple rides from Owls Head to Calais and Canada, a feat he accomplished serval times throughout his life, alone, with friends, and with Lynn.
Those fortunate enough to know Ted well, understood his passion for spirited political discourse. His dear friends Al Barthelette, Bill Sepe, and Dave Rutkin provided him with endless hours of animated conversation. These gatherings were a source of great joy and intellectual stimulation throughout his life.
Ted was very interested in people, laughingly referring to himself as an armchair psychologist.
Ted had a love of cars, trading them so often no one ever knew what he’d pull up in.
Ted and Shirley enjoyed going on little road trips, driving, shopping, and stopping in at their favorite food spots.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Fred Talbot; his brother Robert Talbot; and sister Sallee McShane; Ted is survived by his wife Shirley Talbot of Owls Head; his daughter Lynn Talbot and her partner Kelly Thorndike; a sister-in-law, Josephine Talbot of Rockland, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
