Searsmont Town Library is presenting the work of Searsport artist Kate P. Chapin on the walls of the library through the end of October. A public reception will be held on Friday, Oct. 2, from 5 - 6 p.m., with refreshments. 

Born in New York City, Chapin grew up on the Maine coast, in Vinalhaven and then Searsmont. Continuously creating from an early age, her work has been influenced by the colors, textures, and shapes of Maine's rugged coastal landscape, according to a Library news release. 

She started her formal secondary education at the University of Maine at Orono and the Maine College of Art, then moved to Chicago in 1989 to begin her informal training. There she became part of a vibrant art community which included sculptors Mary Broger and Cynthia Plaster Caster, Sally Timms of The Mekons, John Herndon of the band Tortoise, and John and Frank Navin of The Aluminum Group.

Moving to Hawaii in 2000, Chapin began working in Honolulu, and was invited to the annual GRRRL Fest/Feminist LGTBQ Arts & Performance Festival for 4 years running.

Returning to Maine in 2006 and settling in Searsport, Chapin now teaches art and creates in the Midcoast region.
