Searsmont awarded $37,000 'Hometown Grant'
The Town of Searsmont has been selected as one of T-Mobile's latest 25 Hometown Grant recipients. Each quarter, T-Mobile awards 25 Hometown Grants to small towns with populations of 50,000 or less.
Searsmont's $37,000 grant will go towards renovating the Searsmont Town office, including adding new ADA-compliant doors, a privacy sound booth and additional indoor and outdoor seating options for the community to gather, collaborate and work, according to T-Mobile.
The project was submitted by the Town of Searsmont, and was selected from more than 1,000 applicants this round.
Local officials have shared their excitement about this grant:
- Gail Gary-Cox, Administrative Assistant/Treasurer for the Town of Searsmont, said, “Our Town is not just a town; it’s more like a small family. To be able to make our Community Center a safer more functional facility for our residents, by way of offering a soundproof booth for privacy for classes or appointments, and seating for working, lounging, or just gathering, and most importantly having ADA compliant doors to enter the building and facilities in an easier and safer way warms my heart. Our town is here to help each other in every way that we can, and this is one way that we felt we could help so many.”
- Sandra Weagle, President of the Friends of the Searsmont Library, said, “The addition of accessible doors will allow our aging population to continue to enjoy and participate in the many community events offered by our wonderful Searsmont Library.”
- Steven Brown, Searsmont Library Director, said, “Library patrons and event participants in the Community Building are really going to benefit from the ADA door upgrades made possible by this grant. A really big deal for folks.”
Across Maine, T-Mobile has now provided more than $475,000 to 11 cities through the initiative.
