'Warding Off Witches to Protect House and Home' on topic for Belfast Historical Society
“Warding Off Witches to Protect House and Home” will be the topic of Belfast Historical Society’s meeting, Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library.
Cultural historian Jan Eakins will discuss concealed shoes and other protective devices long used to keep witches and bad luck at bay here in Maine and around the world. Shoes from the historical society’s collection will be examined, and attendees will learn how to find shoes and witch marks in old buildings around us - and what to do if you find one.
"If you’ve discovered an old shoe or other object hidden in your house or barn, please bring it or a photo or story to enrich our discussion," said the historical society.
The Belfast Historical Society presents talks of local historical interest on the 4th Monday of the month from April through October. All presentations are at 7 p.m., in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library and are open to the public. Seating is limited to 75. FMI visit BelfastMuseum.org or call 207 338-9229.
