Fatal crash along Woolwich Route 1 claims Rockland man, injures Waldoboro resident
A Rockland man died in a motor vehicle crash in Woolwich, Friday morning. The operator of the other vehicle, a resident of Waldoboro, was injured.
September 5, 2025, at 4:22 a.m., the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle head-on collision on U.S. Route 1 between the Montsweag Restaurant and the intersection of the Mountain Road. As a result of the collision, both vehicles burst into flames, according to the Sheriff's Office.
A 2022 Toyota Tundra, operated by Alex C. Colson, 38, of Rockland, was traveling north on U.S. Route 1, and crossed over the centerline into the southbound lane. A 2003 Freightliner box truck, operated by Scott Rice, 60, of Waldoboro, was traveling south on U.S. Rt 1, and attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so, according to SCSO.
Mr. Colson died at the scene as a result of extensive injuries. Mr. Rice was able to get out of his vehicle. He was subsequently transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Deputy Alex Faith is investigating the crash which is being reconstructed by members of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.
Woolwich Fire/Rescue provided emergency medical services and assisted at the scene along with Wiscasset Fire Department, and West Bath Fire/Rescue. Also assisting were the Bath Police Department, Topsham Police Department, and Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit. U.S. Rt 1 was closed for approximately 4 hours. It reopened to traffic at 8:30 a.m.
