ST. GEORGE — Sally Robinson Long, 97, life-long resident of St. George, died peacefully at home, Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

Born in St. George, August 31, 1923, she was the daughter of Joseph and Carolena Kinney Robinson. She was educated locally until her junior year in high school when she moved to Lisbon Falls to assist her aunt as a “mother’s helper.” She later graduated from Lisbon Falls High School.

Returning to St. George, Sally trained to be a hairdresser at Al’s Beauty Shop in Rockland.

In April of 1944, Sally married her best friend, Walter Long. Together they made their home in St. George their entire married life and raised four beautiful children there.

Always a hard worker, Sally helped support her family by working at the Bell Shop and later as a telephone operator in Tenants Harbor. She worked at the phone company until dial phones made operators a thing of the past. For many years she worked as a bookkeeper for her father’s Hardware and Building Supply store. After the closing of the store, Sally continued to stay busy, cleaning homes for several local families. Her daughters
remembered she accompanied them on cleaning jobs well into her 80s.

Sally loved her town of St. George. She was an active member of the Grange and a charter member of the St. George Fireflies, the auxiliary for the fire department. Each year she looked forward to holding “Sal’s Birthday Bash,” which raised over four-thousand dollars annually for the Fire Department and Ambulance Service. Given to hospitality, Sally loved spending time with friends, entertaining and laughing. She could connect a total stranger to her family with just a few questions, usually deciding they were related, and probably cousins somewhere down the line. Always active, she loved going to music jams at the Grange and in Thomaston.

The twinkle in her eye, positive spirit and love will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

She is predeceased by her husband, Walter; a special companion, Sten Skogulnd; her siblings, Jeanette Polky, Priscilla Baum, Joanna Johnson, Joseph “Barney” Robinson, Jr.; a granddaughter, Jolene Long; and three great-grandsons, Jacob Tozier, Zachary Elwell, and Ryan Hayward.

Sally is survived by her children, Sally Jo Kinney, Joseph A. Long, Carolyn “Carrie” Elwell and her husband Kenneth all of St. George, and Liz and Tim Moores of Hudson; 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a large, loving extended family.

A celebration of Sally’s life will be held Friday, July 9, 2021, at 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of St. George, 15 Snows Point Road, Wiley’s Corner. Interment and a reception at the Grange will follow immediately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either, St. George Firefighters and Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, ME 04860; or First Baptist Church at Wiley’s Corner, 15 Snow’s Point Road, St. George, ME 04860.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
