Russell E. Campbell, obituary
WALDOBORO — Russell E. Campbell, 78, of Waldoboro, Maine, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness. Russell was born in Camden, Maine, to George Campbell and Justine Norwood Campbell on August 10, 1946.
Russell was a graduate of Camden Rockport high school class of 1965. He worked at Boyton Chevrolet, and enlisted in the Air Force, where he became an aviation electrician. He was also employed by Prince's Furniture, Fuller Equipment and several trucking companies; the latest being Northeast Trucking.
December 27, 1969 he married the love of his life Jane A. Smith at the Methodist Church in Camden, Maine, thus beginning a love story that lasted 40 years until Jane’s death on November 5, 2009.
Russell had a few hobbies, two of which we're taking his rifle out for a walk during hunting season in the woods sometimes he would bring back a buck but we all knew that he loved to enjoy spending time amongst nature. Russell’s other hobby was reading; he enjoyed fantasy novels and the book that started it all was the Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Eventually he would go on to having the whole collection of that series and would read other authors such as Anne McCaffery, Robert Jordan and R.A. Salvatore.
Russell’s real passion was the open road. For nearly most of his life he was the over the road truck driver. He enjoyed seeing the country from the driver's seat of a big rig. His adventures spanned from Maine to California and back. During the summers he would take his two daughters, Heather and Dorothy, along so they could see and learn about the country that he traveled so very often. He retired in 2017 from driving over the road, but we all knew that's where he really truly wanted to be was driving those trucks.
Russell was predeceased by his parents, George and Justine Campbell of Hope; his mother- and father-in-law, Raymond and Elizabeth Smith of Oakland; his brother Walter; and a brother-in-law, Ronald Smith. Most importantly he was predeceased by his wife, the love of his life, Jane Campbell.
Russell is survived by his daughter Heather Campbell-Beasley, her husband Scott and step grandson Mathias; daughter Dorothy Campbell and grandson Colin.
He is also survived by his Aunt Gwen Brodis; his brother Morgan; sister Joan; respective families, many cousins, nieces, nephews and life long friends.
A graveside service will be held August 29, at 1 p.m., at Hope Grove Cemetery on Hatchet Mountain Road, in Hope, Maine. Blessing and Eulogy will be presented by his daughter Heather, in lieu of a religious ceremony.
Celebration of life to be determined.
Russell’s daughters extend a huge thank you to the medical staff at Pen Bay Medical Center and the medical staff at Maine Medical Center (Surgical Intensive Care and Second Floor Richard’s Wing) for all the care that was given to Russell.
