BREWER — The Oceanside varsity softball team hit the road Thursday, April 25 to Brewer and had its sights set on snapping a 23-game winning streak its opponent, the Brewer Witches, rode into the showdown.

Despite its best efforts, the host Witches swung past the Mariners 10-4, giving Oceanside its first loss of the season and extending the Brewer winning streak to 24 games.

Now sporting a 3-1 record, Oceanside will look to get back to its winning ways when the team hosts Morse on Monday, April 29. The team had been scheduled to play Medomak Valley today, April 26, but that game was postponed until Tuesday, April 30.

Oceanside plated a pair of runs in each the fifth and sixth innings. Brewer, meanwhile, plated a run in the first inning, two in the fifth and seven in the sixth.

Oceanside had seven hits, compared to Brewer’s 10.

Oceanside committed four errors and Brewer committed three.

“Oceanside hung in this game but in the end the errors we made, mental mistakes we made just was to much,” said Oceanside head coach Rusty Worcester. “We allowed 5 unearned runs and we can't make mistakes against very good teams. This Brewer club is a very good team. They can hit with the best of them.”

In the pitching circle for Brewer was Libby Hewes, who fanned seven batters and walked three in seven innings.

In the pitching circle for Oceanside was Chloe Jones, who fanned five batters and walked two in six innings.

“Chole struggled tonight with her control and when she couldn't get her change up over for strikes it hurt,” said Worcester. “Chloe has been a work horse early pitching great, she will fix it and get right back on track.”

Pacing the Oceanside offense was Jones (two doubles, two RBIs), Abby Veilleux (double, two RBIs), Raechel Joyce (double) and Jessica Watkinson (two singles).

At the plate for Brewer were Libby Hewes (home run, single, RBI), Olivia Cattan (two singles), Mia Cattan (two singles) and Sarah Kilby (two singles).

“This team will continue to work hard and I have all the confidence in the world they will be better at the end of the year and will be ready for a playoff run,” said Worcester.
