Lewis Charles Grant, obituary
ROCKPORT — Lewis Charles Grant, 90, passed Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at the Sussman House in Rockport. Born in Friendship, August 17, 1934 he was the son of Charles and Beatrice Bramhall Grant. He attended schools in several Maine towns before graduation from Rockland High School in 1952.
As a teenager he was a member of the Sea Scouts. After high school he studied Forestry at the University of Maine before joining the U.S Navy in 1957 where he served on the USS Remey.
Through mutual friends Lewis met Doris Philbrook and the two were married on July 14, 1957. In 1960 the couple welcomed their first child, a son, Peter and in 1965 a daughter, Lisa.
After leaving the Navy in January 1959 he went to work at BIW in Bath until a strike in 1970. He then went to work at Amateur Equipment Sales in Rockland. In 1976, along with his partner, Don Carlson, he started Omni Electronics, a marine electronics company. He was revered as one of the best technicians in the business. He later founded Lew Grant & Associates, where he worked until his retirement in 2010.
He was an active member of the National Marine Electronics Association, the Maine Fisherman’s Forum and a lifetime member of Rockland Lodge of Elks No. 1008. Lewis loved his family and he and Doris were always involved in their children’s activities, even going to Peter’s softball games until he stopped playing at age 52. He also enjoyed bowling, traveling and the ocean. You would often find him on a summer afternoon at the family camp in Cushing digging a few clams and eating them raw right out of the shell.
Predeceased by his parents, and his wife of 60 years, Doris, Lewis is survived by his son, Peter and his wife Kathryn of Lexington Twp; his daughter Lisa McCarthy and her husband Larry of Sanford; his grandchildren, Matthew and Micheal McCarthy of Sanford, Tracy McCarthy of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Ryan Smith and his wife Lorrie of Hartland, Sarah Lent of Solon; and great-grandchildren, Owen and Ava McDonald and Declan Lent, all of Solon.
Family and friends are invited to visit Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter, Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
A celebration of his life will be held Friday, February 7, 2025, at 4 p.m., at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church, 1 Waldo Avenue, Rockland, Rev. Mark Adolphsen officiating, a reception at the church will follow immediately.
