Georges River Trout Unlimited meeting to discuss conservations efforts on the Ducktrap River
The Ducktrap River in Waldo County, Maine is one of only eight watersheds left in the United States that contains Atlantic Salmon, a federally endangered species, and is the only river in the United States with a self-sustaining population of totally wild Atlantic Salmon, according to Georges River Trout Unlimited (GRTU), in a news release. GRTU has been conducting conservation efforts for the Ducktrap River for over twenty years.
Tim Shaw, leader of GRTU’s current conservations efforts on the Ducktrap River, will present an overview of the chapter’s multi-year conservation work on the river and discuss the Priority Water strategic plan and the Ducktrap Sea Run Cold Water Fisheries Monitoring Program which was recently selected for a $4,000 Embrace a Stream grant from TU national.
The presentation, a part of the GRTU's meeting, takes place December 9, upstairs in the fly shop at Maine Sport in Rockport. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. with “Trout Talk,” an informal gathering for those who wish to visit before the presentation. The formal meeting and featured presentation begin at 7 p.m.
In 2023, the Ducktrap River was designated as one of America’s top 200 Priority Waters for conservation by Trout Unlimited (TU) national. As a Priority Water, GRTU has developed a strategic plan in conjunction with government agencies and other nonprofit organizations for future conservation of the Ducktrap’s cold water fishery that will mitigate the effects of a warming climate over the next 25 years.
"The presentation will be a great opportunity for GRTU members and non-members alike to understand the importance of GRTU’s longstanding efforts to conserve and protect the Ducktrap River and how to get involved," said GRTU, in the news release.
Fishing tips for a successful day on the Ducktrap will also be discussed.
GRTU meetings are free and open to the public.
