Explore the charm and history of Medomak House during the Artwalk. They are hosting a DIY art table where the public can create and take home their own custom-designed piece, all ages and skill levels welcome.
"While you’re visiting, learn about the fascinating history of this beloved building and get a sneak peek at a vision for a future Maker’s Space, where creativity and craftsmanship will come to life for our community," said Gravedigger’s Daughter.
Medomak House is a part of Medomak Exchange, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, located in Waldoboro. Their vision is for a town where people work together in and out of their neighborhoods and social groups – where there’s a common effort for everyone to be seen, heard, able to feel like they belong, able to contribute and be valued for their contribution – a culture where kindness, creativity and generosity flow.
Other venues include Pinky LaRue Vintage, Perch Café & Bakery, and the Heywood Gallery.
"I want to thank the many who have visited the Heywood Gallery this year," says Heywood, "and a Pick-a-Percent sale is a way to show my gratitude to gallery visitors. One of the greatest compliments to artists is to have their artwork collected. A collected painting or print, one that an artist creates and another person falls in love with and purchases, is the embodiment of 'sharing and connecting' in the deepest artistic sense. Collectors’ support is, in large part, why the Heywood Gallery can continue to have a presence in this beautiful village area of Waldoboro."
Collectors who choose an original painting or print to purchase will be invited to pull one tile from a Pick-a-Percent bag. Depending upon the color of the number on the tile chosen they may receive an immediate discount of 5% (blue), 10% (orange), 15% (red), 20% (black), 40% (red “face” tile), or 50% (black “face” tile). One tile discount per item (painting or print) purchased on August 22. Notecards and gift certificates are not eligible for a discount.
Visit The Waldo Theatre Gallery for works by artist Jean Kigel. Known locally for her Asian brush paintings, Kigel has selected an array of richly colorful florals, landscapes, birds and vegetables to display as part of ‘Eastern Resplendence: brush paintings by Jean Kigel.’ Asian brush painting consists of many styles of painting originating in China centuries ago. Freely controlled brush strokes are a trademark of Kigel’s style. She paints using bamboo brushes, ink sticks, absorbent rice papers, and mineral and organic pigments. Integral to her compositions is the red chop, signifying either her name, or a bit of philosophy. Her favorite chop translates to "whispering waves" symbolic of the wind and the water of her Back Cove Studio + Gallery.
The Open House of History at the Customs House presents the third in a series of public lectures exploring Waldoboro’s emotional history. Michael Amico will present a lecture at 6 pm inspired by John H. Kennedy, a 19th-century lawyer and shipbuilding financier who died of an overdose during the Civil War. Through Kennedy’s life and death, we’ll explore the political and economic context of overdose, and the ways history opens a space for empathy and present-day healing. The evening includes a brief conversation after the talk and a display of images honoring lives lost to substance use, provided by Maine Sharing—a statewide Facebook group dedicated to remembrance. This event is in partnership with Studio B and Maine Sharing, and in conjunction with International Overdose Awareness Day.
Gravedigger’s Daughter features handmade chairs by Andy Glenn, and the work of photographer Diana Carbone. Carbone is a visual artist whose work focuses on the connection between humans and our desire to document our loved ones and the spaces they occupy. Her work often investigates the role the photographs play in creating a familial and self-identity through photo albums and family collections, as well as the role that greenery plays in our establishment of home and domestic spaces.
Late night in the Village, visit The Waldoboro Inn and Ida’s Garden Bar at 5 pm, enjoy the garden, a glass of wine, bites, and stay for Summons of the Woods at 6:30 pm. Admission is $10 or pay what you can, and includes readings by Cam and Claire Parker and sounds by Straka and Vortice. All proceeds are split between the artists and direct support to families in Gaza.
Artwalk Waldoboro occurs on the 4th Friday of the month, from May-August. 2025 dates include May 23, June 27, July 25, and August 22.
