On Thursday, November 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., the Belfast Community Co-op will be hosting a free wine tasting featuring La Riojana wines.  Everyone is welcome to attend, whether or not you are a Co-op member. 21+, ID required.With the holiday season approaching, the event will provide an opportunity to try wines and to buy six packs and cases at a 10% discount.

The third largest exporter of wine in Argentina, La Riojana produces award-winning reds and whites for all to enjoy. It is a cooperatively owned enterprise in which every worker has a vote in deciding how the business will be run. When you buy Cooperative and Fair Trade wines and other products, you are supporting environmentally and economically sustainable production, ensuring that small-scale farmers and growers earn a fair price for what they produce. Collectively, La Riojana members help to produce over four million cases of wine a year from over 4,000 hectares of vineyards. Over 80% of them are small-scale producers, with the majority owning no more than three hectares of land each. 

La Riojana provides each and every member a higher-than-average market price for their grapes. They ensure their members benefit from lower prices through collective purchasing of services and products, like diesel, fertilizer, and frost insurance. The company also offers its members financial and credit support to help them through difficult times and provides technical and agricultural advice as well. By working closely with their members, they are able to ensure that all the products produced by La Riojana (including wines, sparkling wines, grape juice, and olive oil) meet the highest quality standards expected by their international partners and customers.

Along with wine, the Belfast Community Co-op will be serving samples of cooperatively made cheeses, including Isigny Brie from France and Organic Valley Grass milk cheddar, and crackers.
