Title: Green Burial Film Screening: ‘Steelmantown’
Date: Thu, Oct 1, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Description: Midcoast Maine Green Burial and Camden Public Library invite the public to a live showing of the film ‘Steelmantown’. The film will be presented in the Camden Public Library Picker Room on October 1 at 6:30 PM. There will be time for questions and discussion. All are welcome.
The film tells the story of Steelmantown Cemetery. Tucked in the Pine Barrens of Upper Township, New Jersey, Steelmantown Cemetery dates back to around 1700 and serves as New Jersey’s first official green burial preserve. Once a heavily vandalized and neglected dumping ground, it was miraculously rescued by a local resident and transformed into a peaceful ecological sanctuary and Green Burial Preserve.
Title: Exhibit: ‘Deconstruction in Practice: Bridging Past and Future’ by Second Story Builders
Date: Thu, Oct 1 – Sat, Oct 31
Description: Camden Public Library welcomes Second Story Builders for their exhibit in the Picker Room through the month of October. The public is invited to visit the Picker Room during the library’s open hours to view the exhibit. There will also be an opening reception and presentation for the exhibit on Saturday, October 10 at 2:00 PM.
The exhibit will include multiple artifacts, 3D models, and more from Second Story Builders’ reclaimed-material construction and transformation projects.
Second Story Builders, founded by Danny Salomon, is a mission-driven business advancing “circular reconstruction,” a more resourceful and regenerative approach to building in Midcoast Maine. Second Story Builders carefully takes buildings apart to recover their materials – a practice known as “deconstruction” -, then sells those reclaimed materials through its Radical Reuse Center in Union, and they also undertake design & build projects around the continued use of the recovered materials. A “Secondhand First” approach to new construction.

Sean Gaskell features songs on the kora- a 21 stringed West African harp. He studied under the extensive instruction of Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia, and both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal. The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots. Many songs featured on the kora preserve an 800-year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire. Gaskell has presented adult, youth and family programs at over 350 libraries and a multitude of k-12 schools, colleges, universities and assisted living facilities throughout the United States and Canada.
