Judith Graham Burgess, obituary
ROCKPORT — Judith Ann Graham Burgess, 75, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, in Rockport, Maine after a courageous multi-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by the beauty of a place she loved and in the company of her husband, brother, and best friend. Judy lived a life defined by love, service, strength, and an unwavering devotion to the people and animals she cared for. She had a remarkable ability to make those around her feel protected, supported, and loved. For her family and friends, Judy was the person you called when you needed someone in your corner.
Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Judy found her calling early in life as a nurse. She attended the Albany Medical Center School of Nursing in Albany, New York, and began her career at Albany Medical Center on a general surgery floor. It was there that she met her husband, Andrew Burgess, then a medical student. Andrew was immediately impressed by Judy—and perhaps a little intimidated by her strength and confidence. Their meeting was the beginning of a partnership that would last for more than four decades. Together, Judy and Andy built a life that took them from Albany to Switzerland, Baltimore, Orlando, and ultimately Houston. Along the way, Judy continued her education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration and Managed Care. She was also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. Her nursing instincts never really turned off. Judy took it upon herself to help friends and family through illnesses, medical questions, and difficult moments. She had a gift for making sense of complicated diagnoses and an even greater gift for making people feel that they were not facing them alone. Countless people benefited from her knowledge, but even more benefited from her compassion.
Judy also had a tremendous love for animals. Throughout her life, she rescued numerous dogs and welcomed them into her family. She had a soft spot for those who needed a second chance, and she gave them the same loyalty and unconditional love that she gave to the people in her life.
Judy was a devoted wife, a fiercely loving mother, a proud grandmother, and a friend who could always be counted on. She loved her family deeply and never stopped encouraging them or challenging them to be better than the day before, protecting them when needed, and celebrating their accomplishments.
Judy is survived by her beloved husband, Andrew; her sons, Graham (Esmeralda) and Colin (Lauren); her four grandchildren, Duncan, Eloise, Margot, and Sophia, who brought her immense pride and joy; and her brother, Gary. Her family will carry her with them in the lessons she taught them, the stories they will continue to tell, the people she helped, the animals she rescued, and, most of all, the love she gave so freely.
At the family’s request, there will be no service at this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Judy’s memory.
