Kauko Ensio Wilson, obituary
ROCKLAND — Kauko Ensio Wilson passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on the evening of September 29, 2026, at Breakwater Commons in Rockland, Maine.
Born on October 10, 1935, in Helsinki, Finland, Kauko was the son of Toive W. and Anna E. (Tasanen) Wilson. His early childhood was shaped by the resilience required during World War II. While his father served as a Harbor Pilot in Helsinki, Kauko, his mother, his sister, and his younger brother sought safety in the Finnish countryside. He often spoke of a treasured childhood memory: a special Christmas trip to church by horse and sleigh.
In 1946, at the age of ten, Kauko emigrated to the United States with his father, his younger sister, and his younger brother. After a 13-day journey on a freightliner, they arrived on February 1, 1946. His mother joined them eight months later once her visa was finalized. Kauko spent seven years in New York City, where he enjoyed going to the movies and considered himself a movie buff. John Wayne and war movies were his favorites.
In 1953, the family moved to a working farm in Washington, Maine. Kauko enlisted in the Army as a supply handler and served from December 21, 1956, to December 11, 1959. He was stationed in Germany and California. Among his standout memories from his service in Germany was issuing ammunition to none other than Elvis Presley. He often joked that he served with Robert F. Vaughn, who later became a famous actor. He returned to Washington when his term in the Army ended.
He moved to Lewiston, Maine, and worked for Bates Fabric Incorporated for many years. He would travel to Washington to visit his parents and family on the weekends. In his later years, he lived in the Knox Hotel Apartments located in Thomaston, Maine.
Kauko embraced the Maine outdoors with enthusiasm. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and many of his happiest moments were spent camping and fishing alongside his sister and family.
Kauko was a proud advocate for his Finnish heritage. He was a member of the Finn-Am Society of Mid-Coast Maine and a devoted member of the Finnish Congregational Church and the Finnish American House.
Kauko returned to Finland a couple of times on bus tours organized by a Finnish woman. One of the trips was a two-week bus tour with his sister, her husband, and her children in 2012. During the trip, they were able to visit their cousins in Oulu, and their cousins from Germany were also present, which made their visit very special.
Kauko was predeceased by his parents, Toive W. and Anna E. (Tasanen) Wilson; his sister, Kirsti Fish (and husband Arthur); and his brother, Toive Wilson (and wife Barbara).
He is survived by his nieces and nephews: Deborah E. Johnston and husband Thomas, Ronald Taylor, Ronald I. Creamer Jr. and wife Theresa, and Laurie L. Stephenson and husband Randy.
Kauko’s legacy lives on through his sister’s grandchildren: Susanne Cooke, Jessica Johnston, Kevin Taylor, Jennifer Garbinski, R. Forrest Flagg III, Christopher Taylor, and Ronald I. Creamer III; as well as 12 great-grandchildren. He leaves behind several cousins in Finland, Germany, and the U.S., as well as his nephews: Billy, Matthew, Christopher, Nicholas, and Zachary Wilson.
Kauko will be remembered as a devoted veteran, uncle, and friend. His family extends their deepest gratitude to the caregivers at Breakwater Commons and MaineHealth Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness.
A graveside committal will take place Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 3 p.m., at the Levensaler Cemetery on Jefferson Road, Route 126, Washington. Reverend Michelle Wiley will be officiating the service.
