The truth about rodenticides and safer more effective rodent control for Belfast
Event Date
Tuesday, October 13, 2026 - 06:00 pm to 07:30 pmOn Oct. 13, from 6 to 7:30, at the Belfast Public Library, rodenticides and their use will be discussed by a panel of experts, ranging from a veterinarian to a pest service owner, and wildlife advocates.
Rodenticides are highly toxic poisons used to kill rodents and have devastating impacts on wildlife, according to the panel organizers. Instead of solving the problem, many of these poisons are killing or sickening wildlife including rodents’ natural predators (raptors, owls, foxes, etc.), as well as pets as these toxins move through the food web.
Homeowners may not even know that their own pest management systems use rodenticides and are contributing to non-targeted wildlife deaths.
Integrated Pest Management strategies will be presented along with displays of rodenticide-free rodent control options.
Panelists include:
Anthony Erwin, Maine Audubon Policy Advocate
Avery Berkowitz, Maine Wildlife Rehabilitation
Dan Smith, Modern Pest Services
Jacquie Gage, Rodenticide-Free Maine Coalition
Moderator: Don Hoenig, former ME State Veterinarian
Co-sponsored by The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition & the Rodenticide-Free Maine Coalition
