SEARSPORT — The Parsonage Gallery welcomes two new exhibitions for the holiday season: its second annual winter group exhibition and Bare Places, featuring Diana Baumbach and Augusta Sparks.

The exhibitions run through February 26. The opening will feature an outdoor video projection by Justin Levesque exploring the ecology of the Penobscot Bay, using footage shot during the artist’s Searsport EcoArt Residency this autumn.

Downstairs, the group exhibition features works in various media, including paintings, photographs, and sculptures. Participating artists include Kimberly Callas, Alison Dibble, Dan Dowd, Grace Hager, Alanna Hernandez, Allegra Kuhn, John Woodruff, Sue Michlovitz, Amanda Millis, and Caroline Sulzer. From different angles, artists explore the theme of hygge, a Scandinavian term for the sense of cozy contentment that winter can bring, accompanied by a great book — or indeed great work of art.

In the upstairs gallery, Maine artists Diana Baumbach and Augusta Sparks respond to the sparse, stark beauty of Maine winter, from windswept blueberry barrens to frigid ocean vistas. Reflecting on such Bare Places, the title of their exhibition, prompts them to look inward, to the textures and materials of the home, as well as the body itself. In works conjured from primal materials like wood, fur, fiber, and wax, subtle notes of sensuality appear. Amidst the austerity of winter there is an invitation to revel in the supple warmth of bare skin.

The Parsonage Gallery exhibits dynamic work by a diverse slate of contemporary artists, with a special emphasis on issues of ecology and spirituality. It is co-founded and directed by Dr. Aaron Rosen and Dr. Carolyn Rosen and is a program of the not-for-profit Common Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3). It is open 11am-6pm daily.
