2nd Annual 'Women in St. George' historical society program to recognize Eliza Steele

Thursday, May 21, 2026 - 07:00 pmThe St. George Historical Society will honor the life and legacy of Eliza Jane Steele during its 2nd Annual Women in St. George program, May 21, at the Town Office Meeting Room. A community potluck will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m.
"In celebration of Mother’s Day, we invite you to learn about one remarkable woman whose dedication and compassion left a lasting impact on our region," said the Historical Society, in a news release.
Born in 1898, Eliza Jane Steele was a proud St. George native and the founding nurse of the Rockland District Nursing Association, according to the Society. For 40 years, she led the RDNA, traveling door to door to care for the health needs of residents throughout Rockland and surrounding communities.
"We are honored to welcome Peta vanVuuren, St. George resident and executive director of RDNA, along with a distinguished guest who knew and worked alongside Eliza Steele," said the Historical Society.
Together, they will share stories and reflections on a woman whose life of service touched countless lives.
