Cushing Community School students to hold annual plant, seedling and bake sale fundraiser, June 1

The Cushing Community School students have been busy growing vegetables and flowers from seed, and creating informational posters to be ready for their fourth annual plant, seedling, and bake sale, Sunday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

The fundraiser is a collaborative effort by the teaching staff, the CCS Family and Friends Group, and the Georges River Land Trust, who will host the event at the Langlais Art Preserve on 576 River Road in Cushing, rain or shine.

The Waldo County Climate Action Coalition announces its first annual Climate Resilience Fair, Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., at Steamboat Landing in Belfast.

Merryspring’s annual Spring Plant Sale will be held Friday, May 16, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

UMaine Extension features soil health in virtual lunch and learn series

University of Maine Cooperative Extension will present a 7-part online lunch and learn series intended to help farmers take their soil health to the next level. The sessions will be held from noon–1 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 27 to July 8. 

The sessions are for farmers who have experience with soil health practices and want to build on those outcomes and benefits. Topics will include crop rotation considerations, advanced cover cropping techniques, enhanced soil amendment use and reduced tillage.

Waldo County Technical Center (WCTC) will host its Senior Achievement Night on Wednesday, May 28, at 6 p.m., at the Crosby Center at 96 Church Street in Belfast, Maine. This event is to honor all seniors and CNA students from the Tech Center, to recognize those students who have earned special awards, and to present scholarships to members of the senior class.

Seniors should arrive at 5:30 p.m. for a group photo on the front step of the Crosby building.

12th Annual Boots on the Ground at Montpelier

The General Henry Knox Museum invites the community to its 12th Annual Boots on the Ground event. This Memorial Weekend celebration honors veterans, military personnel, and their families. The event will take place on Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the grounds of Montpelier, which is the big white house just off Route 1 at the turn to Saint George in Thomaston. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony in Warren will be held Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m.

The event starts at the monument at the top of Main Street, by the post office, and will parade to the bottom of the hill, with another ceremony at bridge.

ROCKPORT and BELFAST — Community members are invited to attend farmers markets on the MaineHealth Pen Bay and Waldo Hospital campuses this spring.

The MHPBH event will take place on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the main hospital campus, in the parking lot of the Physicians Building (4 Glen Cove Dr.).

The MHWH event will take place Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the parking lot to the right of the Biscone Medical Building (119 Northport Ave.), across the street from the main hospital.

ST. GEORGE— Spring has arrived and so have the birds. Join Georges River Land Trust and coastal birder Ann Boover, Saturday, May 31, at 7:30 a.m., for a guided bird walk at Fort Point Trail in St. George. Boover will identify migratory birds by sight and song.

"This is a great chance to learn, share a love of birds, and get outside," said GRLT, in a news release.

This walk is free and open to everyone, from beginner birders to master naturalists. All ages are welcome.

"Warm weather is here, and plants are growing in the greenhouse at the high school," said a news release. "We invite all you gardeners to come check out the Camden Hills Annual Plant Sale the weekend after Mother’s Day."

Available will be vegetable and herb seedlings, and a variety of annuals and perennial flowers.

"We have a great bunch of student growers this year who have been tending some new varieties and many of the most popular varieties from the past," said the release.

Husson University bestows honorary degree on Kate Braestrup

BANGOR — Kate Braestrup, of Lincolnville, was recognized by the Husson University Board of Trustees, who bestowed on her an honorary degree for public service.

 "The honorary degree recognizes distinguished accomplishments in profession, public service, philanthropy and service to humanity," said Husson President Lynne Coy-Ogan, at Husson's May 10, 2025 commencement, in Bangor. "It is is the highest degree a univerisity can confer."

Braestrup is an author and chaplain for the Maine Warden Service.

Students at Thomaston Grammar School have been focusing on cooperation during the month of April. Several students at Thomaston Grammar School were recognized for being cooperative at a school-wide assembly on May 1. The students receiving this award are known to cooperate and be team players.

On Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Jackson Memorial Library in Tenants Harbor will hold its Annual Plant Sale.

A variety of plants will be on offer, including perennials, annuals, seedlings, veggies, flowers, houseplants, and more. Gardening tools and plant containers will also be included. Labeled plants and garden tool donations will be accepted the week leading up to the sale during regular open hours. No plant donations after Friday May 23.
