Husson University bestows honorary degree on Kate Braestrup
BANGOR — Kate Braestrup, of Lincolnville, was recognized by the Husson University Board of Trustees, who bestowed on her an honorary degree for public service.
"The honorary degree recognizes distinguished accomplishments in profession, public service, philanthropy and service to humanity," said Husson President Lynne Coy-Ogan, at Husson's May 10, 2025 commencement, in Bangor. "It is is the highest degree a univeristy can confer."
Braestrup is an author and chaplain for the Maine Warden Service.
"Her work with wardens as they search the wildlands and freshwaters of Maine looking for those who have have lost their way and giving comfort to the loved ones is a tremendous example of the life service she leads," said Coy-Ogan.
Educated at the Parsons School of Design/New School and Georgetown Universty, Braestrup was inspired to become a minister and to write several books. After losing her husband, Maine State Trooper Drew Griffith, in the line of duty in 1996, and as the widowed mom of four children, she entered Bangor Theological Seminary in 1997, and was ordained in 2004. She has served as chaplain of Maine Warden service since 2001. Ai gifted write and speaker, she is the author of numerous books, including Anchors and Flares.
"Through her words and actions, Kate has chosen a life of service to others, transforming her grief into a gift for many," said Coy-Ogan.
