The taking of private property is not the Maine way of living
In reviewing the website of the Megunticook River Keepers I noticed this simple sentence embedded at the bottom of one of their many paragraphs.
“Restoring the river will open up more opportunities for an extended and enhanced river walk."
Is this a long-range plan to open hiking to the public along the length of the river? If so, are they suggesting that private property will be taken from the backyards of property owners along the river and put in public domain?
They have said in another written statement they want to open the river to hiking. This plan would put strangers into the backyards of property owners and perhaps put their children and grandchildren who play outdoors at risk.
Even without play spaces for children, the taking of private property is not the Maine way of living. Everyone who has paid their dues, worked hard, and purchased the home of their dreams has a right to privacy and protection of that dream.
Voters, take note. When making your decision at the polls on June 10 please consider the possible long-range plans for the river. The owners of riverfront property should have the same protections of privacy and security as you and I.
Thank you for your consideration
