Six-week meditation class starts Oct. 26

Wed, 10/13/2021 - 1:00pm

On Tuesday, October 26, The Dancing Elephant will launch a 6-week meditation class, “Discovering the Heart Sutra,” via Zoom. The course is co-facilitated by Rachel Nixon and Kendra Arey, and it is open to the community by donation. Registration is required to receive Zoom link.

This class is an invitation to explore one of Buddhism's most well-known teachings, the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra. This sutra, which is more than 2,500 years old, is recited by millions of Buddhist practitioners every day in monasteries and centers throughout the world. It reveals the Buddha’s essential teachings on emptiness, compassion, and fearlessness.

The recommended book for the class is The Other Shore: A New Translation of the Heart Sutra with Commentaries by Thich Nhat Hanh.

The course includes meditation, study, discussion, and experiential exercises.

Rachel Nixon has been exploring Buddhist teachings since 1999. She has trained at the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts, as well as at Shambhala Buddhist Centers in the U.S. and Canada.

Kendra Arey is an artist, teacher, art therapist, and Buddhist practitioner. In 2015, she started the local recovery group that is now known as Rockland Recovery Dharma.

The Dancing Elephant is a community center for yoga, meditation, and art with online offerings and yoga classes at Union Hall in Rockport.
