Youth Leadership: Scouts Leading Scouts
So far this school year has seen the Scouts from BSA Troop 200 outdoors in almost any weather: rafting the Kennebec River’s whitewater rapids, camping alongside the Penobscot Bay, exploring the nooks and crannies of Camp Hinds, serving as end note to the Christmas By the Sea Parade, helping build the Lincolnville Beach Bonfire, winter camping and ice fishing at Camp Roosevelt, and most recently racing gear-laden sleds through the snowy trails of Witherle Woods across from Maine Maritime Academy.
All the while Scouts were leading their fellow Scouts — youth leading each other and working together while cooking outdoors, hiking, helping with service projects, learning and practicing wilderness First Aid, and more.
Adult supervision is provided, but the Scouts are the ones who plan their trips: where they will go, what they’ll do, and what and how they’ll eat for each weekend campout. They shop for food, pack and load their gear, set up camp, and lead the weekend’s activities. Senior Scouts help guide newer troop members.
This scouting year still holds much exploration, fun learning, and leading opportunities: more winter and then springtime campouts and hikes that could include Acadia, Katahdin, and a hut-to-hut trip.
But first... Your delicious hot pizza awaits — at American Flatbread during the Troop’s annual Flatbread Pizza fundraiser and silent auction on Tuesday, February 24, 4:00-8:00 pm. American Flatbread will donate a portion of pizza sales to the Troop, so come on out to support your local Scouts.
While you’re there, be sure to stop by the auction tables up front to check out the fun offerings. Bidding opens at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, February 24 and closes at 7:30 pm.
Funds raised at this event will help to offset monthly camping costs like site fees and food, camp trailer and equipment maintenance, and also provide for summer camp scholarships. Thanks to the local businesses who donated great items to the auction.
