ST. GEORGE — William Marion Roney passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026 at Maine Medical Center in Portland at the age of 85 with his wife and daughters by his side. William, most knew him as Bill, was born January 17, 1941 in Kinston, Alabama.

On February 3, 1959 at age 18, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard in Dade City, Florida. His career was spent working on the water commanding several ships from Virginia to Maine. He and his crews protected our oceans, cleaned and repaired buoys to help those who navigated the vast ocean waters and also helped keep the waterways free of ice during the cold Maine winters. He served on the USCGC Nemesis during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He received several medals and ribbons including National Service Defense medals, Unit Commendation ribbons, Coast Guard Sea Service ribbons among other accolades.

He met his future wife, Margie, in New York in 1965 and married shortly thereafter, they spent 61 years together. During that time, they raised two beautiful daughters Marie and Carolyn.

After 28 years of service, he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 on March 1, 1987. Following his retirement from the Coast Guard, he continued to work for several years. He worked in the lobster industry, as well as at Sears & Robuck and Sherwin Williams. His time after that was spent taking care of himself, his wife and their home where they loved being together. He also loved spending time with his daughters. Cooking for his girls, talking about and watching baseball and football and getting help with projects around the house made him happy. He will always be loved and remembered by his wife and daughters and is greatly missed by them.

He was predeceased by his parents, Etheridge and Jimmie Roney, and sister-in-law Linda Roney.

He is survived by his wife, Margie of Port Clyde; his daughters, Carolyn and her partner Chris Caron, Marie Roney and her partner Brenda Merrill; a brother, Jerry Roney; his sister, Carol Vician; a brother, Mickey Roney and his wife Vivian, all from Georgia; a brother, Jack and his wife Julie from Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Mr. Roney’s wishes, his family has chosen to remember his life privately.
