APPLETON — The Washington Grunge, in partnership with Georges River Land Trust and Midcoast Conservancy, continues to host Welcoming Walkabouts, a hiking series for LGBTQIA+ community members at various trails throughout the Midcoast. LGBTQIA+ community members, along with their allies, are invited to explore the preserve’s woodland, riverside trails and connect with new and familiar friends.

Join in on the next Welcoming Walkabout on Sunday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m., at Georges River Land Trust’s Appleton Preserve.

"This preserve offers beautiful views of the St. George River from a trail that meanders along its banks," according to a GRLT news release. "This property was conserved for its extensive river frontage and important wetland and marsh habitats."

It hosts a variety of wildlife including beavers, minks, porcupines, owls, ducks, and many other critters.

The Washington Grunge is an affirming rural community for LGBTQIA+ folks, families, and friends. Founded in west Knox County, all are welcome to come as they are.

Welcoming Walkabouts are hosted by Grunge founder Sarah Masters. Masters is a local journalist covering regional arts programming.

Georges River Land Trust has been conserving and caring for the St. George River watershed since 1987. The land trust has conserved over 5,600 acres of forest, farm, and shoreline, and provides over 80 miles of public trails in 19 towns from Cushing to Liberty.
