New monthly series, library programs, and Common Ground Country Fair appearances highlight a growing literary community.

The Waldoboro Public Library launches its new Poet's Corner this September, opening the door to a month of readings, new programs, and literary gatherings that reflect the remarkable growth of Midcoast Maine's poetry community.

What began just two years ago as conversations among local poets has grown into the Midcoast Poetry Journal, introducing nearly 80 Maine poets to new audiences while building a network of readings, workshops, and literary friendships throughout the region.

Today, the Journal partners with libraries, schools, bookstores, community organizations, and cultural institutions across the Midcoast to create opportunities for both established and emerging poets, strengthening connections through the shared power of literature.

The celebration begins Monday, Sept. 7, with Coastal Verse at Pascal Hall, featuring Heather Webster and Spotlight Poet Lise Kunkel.

The centerpiece of the month arrives on Saturday, Sept. 12, when the Waldoboro Public Library celebrates the grand opening of its new Poet's Corner with a community launch party from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Selected poets from the Midcoast Poetry Journal will present featured readings before the microphone opens for a brief community open mic, welcoming both seasoned writers and those sharing their poetry publicly for the very first time.

More than a single afternoon's celebration, the event marks the beginning of a new literary partnership between the Waldoboro Public Library and the Midcoast Poetry Journal. The Poet's Corner is envisioned as a welcoming gathering place where readers, writers, and lovers of poetry can meet, discover new voices, and celebrate the written word together.

That partnership continues on Thursday, Sept. 17, with the launch of Poets & Poetry, a new monthly series led by poet Len Geminara. Meeting on the third Thursday of each month, the gathering invites readers, writers, and anyone curious about poetry to enjoy readings, thoughtful conversation, and the discovery of new voices.

The month concludes Sept. 26 and 27, when poets from the Midcoast Poetry Journal will present readings in Russell's Poetry Grove at the Common Ground Country Fair, sharing work inspired by Maine's working waterfronts, forests, villages, families, and the ever-changing sea, alongside poems exploring memory, resilience, justice, and hope.

The Midcoast Poetry Journal welcomes both established authors and first-time writers, publishing voices that reflect the richness and diversity of contemporary Maine. Three volumes have already appeared, each expanding a community where experienced poets stand beside those seeing their names in print for the very first time.

The Journal continues to grow through collaborations with organizations that believe literature strengthens communities.

Among those collaborators is Herring Gut Coastal Science Center in Port Clyde, where poetry, science, and environmental stewardship regularly intersect. Through workshops, public programs, and creative collaborations, Herring Gut has helped create opportunities for writers, educators, scientists, and community members to discover the connections between observation, creativity, and place.

The Journal also collaborates with Midcoast libraries, including Rockport Public Library, Rockland Public Library, Jackson Memorial Library, Thomaston Public Library, Skidompha Library, and now Waldoboro Public Library. Together, they are creating welcoming spaces where readers become writers, writers become mentors, and neighbors discover one another through shared stories.

Independent bookstores have become valued collaborators as well. Barnswallow Books in Rockport and Hello Hello Books in Rockland continue to support local authors and literary events, helping connect Maine writers with new audiences throughout the region.

Perhaps the greatest discovery has been how many poets have quietly been waiting for an invitation. After nearly every reading, someone says, "I've been writing for years, but I've never read aloud." The following month, many return to the microphone. Then someone else finds the courage to step forward. That simple act of welcome is how literary communities grow.

Submissions for the next volume of the Midcoast Poetry Journal open in December, and new writers are encouraged to participate, whether widely published or sharing a poem beyond family and friends for the first time.

As summer turns toward autumn, September offers more than a calendar of literary events. It offers an invitation to gather, to listen, and to celebrate the voices that continue to make Midcoast Maine one of the state's most vibrant literary communities.
