(Photo by Sarah Shepherd) Lady Knox Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and the Camden-Rockport Historical Society held a joint tree planting ceremony on the grounds of the Historical Society on Saturday, May 16. The event was made possible through the generous support of community donors, Plants Unlimited, who donated the 15 gallon Kwanzan Cherry Tree and Jackson Landscaping, who donated transportation and professional planting services.
In conjunction with America’s 250th Anniversary, members of the DAR and the Historical Society gathered for a memorial service honoring Knox County’s Revolutionary War patriots. The Chapter also honored deceased member and Honorary Chapter Regent, Mary Gammon, as part of the Chapter’s annual memorial service conducted during the tree planting ceremony.
The Kwanzan Cherry Tree is a symbol of renewal and rebirth, fleeting beauty, cultural friendship, and a symbol of honor for those who died in battle, according to Lady Knox DAR, in a news release.
"The tree will serve as a reminder to the community of the Revolutionary War patriots who sacrificed their lives for American freedom as well as all those who have given their lives to protect that freedom over the last 250 years," said Lady Knox DAR.
The tree also stands as a tribute to all the community members who help keep Knox County history alive, according to Lady Knox Chapter regent Mary Kay Felton. The Historical Society plans to place a marker at the base of the tree commemorating the tree's dedication.
