Event Date
Saturday, June 13, 2026 - 10:00 amJoin Warren Historical Society and Warren's Town Sexton, Amanda Shelmerdine, Saturday, June 13, at 10 a.m., at the Warren Town Office parking lot, for a tour of the Town Cemetery.
This year the Town of Warren is celebrating its 250th anniversary; the tour group will learn about several of Warren's prominent early settlers and immigrants who were laid to rest in this cemetery.
According to a Historical Society news release, the land that the Town Cemetery or “Old Yard” was built upon was sold by William Lermond to Daniel Dunbar, the Town treasurer, on December 12, 1793. It was noted in the Annals of Warren by Cyrus Eaton “As if hastening to occupy this newly appointed resting-place, great numbers of children were carried off, this season, by the scarlet fever, also known as “throat distemper.”
The cemetery has been enlarged several times over the past 200+ years, and is now broken up into three sections; north, center and south. The group will stop by the graves of veterans from the American Revolutionary War, ship captains, children, politicians, farmers and housewives – to learn about how they contributed to the establishment and growth of Warren.
Closed-toed shoes are recommended for the tour.
