This annual festival highlights original works by Maine playwrights, bringing together local artists for an evening of bold, inventive storytelling across four distinct one-act plays, according to Maskers, in a news release. Spanning genres from dark comedy and whimsical fantasy to psychological drama, this year’s lineup showcases a wide range of voices and perspectives from across the state.
The festival includes “Kitchen Knife” by Angelina Nichols, directed by Ivy Lobato. Set in a post-apocalyptic America, the play follows Daphne as she seeks refuge on a seemingly idyllic farm, only to discover that safety may come at a cost. The cast features April Rejman, Kelly Gubbels, Robbin League, and Cassidy Small.
Also featured is “Dust” by Eddie Adelman, directed by Tyler Johnstone. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the play explores an unexpected connection between two men waiting to hop a freight train. The cast includes Jason Stubbs and Taylor Sherritt.
In “on astral projection & troubleshooting for the stars” by Keaton Harper, directed by Maci Burgess, audiences are transported to a surreal projection booth at the intersection of Heaven and Earth. As a system begins to fail, an unlikely protagonist faces an existential crisis of cosmic proportions. The cast includes Mark Durbin, Olivia West, Greta Brown, Tyler Johnstone, Robbin League, and Cassidy Small.
Rounding out the festival is “Miss Le Gallienne Announces the New Season” by Carolyn Gage, directed by Gwyneth Sauvage. The play centers on actress Eva Le Gallienne as she faces a pivotal press conference shaped by personal and professional upheaval. Emily Fetter appears in the role.
Performances will take place over two weekends, with the first weekend featuring cabaret-style seating with refreshments, followed by traditional theater seating the second weekend. The Thursday, June 4 performance will serve as a preview night and will not include food service.
Performances run June 4–14 at the Basil Burwell Community Theater, 17 Court Street, Belfast. Showtimes are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit www.belfastmaskers.com.
