STONINGTON — Representative Genevieve McDonald, D-Stonington, has announced her re-election campaign as a candidate for the Maine House of Representatives for District 134.

District 134 includes Southwest Harbor, Tremont, Cranberry Isles, Frenchboro, Swan’s Island, Isle au Haut, Deer Isle, Stonington, North Haven and Vinalhaven.

Elected in 2018, Rep. McDonald is running for her second term.

“It has been my honor to serve this district and I hope to continue working for the people as their representative in Augusta,” she said in a news release.

McDonald is a commercial lobsterman and serves on the Joint Standing Committee on Marine Resources, according to a press release. She is also a member of the Maine Climate Council working group focused on Community Resiliency, Emergency Planning and Public Health, the release noted.

“Having a seat at the table has given me an opportunity to help craft policies that successfully manage our marine resources,” she said. “As we address the impacts of climate change we must continue to not only protect our marine ecosystem, but also mitigate and adapt to the challenges faced by our island communities.”

McDonald is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Maine with a B.A. in University Studies and a minor in Maine Studies.

“I am running as a Democrat because I believe that’s how we can best achieve positive results,” she stated. “I am focused on problem solving and forging partnerships to achieve solutions that benefit the people of Maine.”

Rep. McDonald is a mom to twin daughters, Evalina and Elise.

“As a working parent I understand the rewards and challenges of raising a family in Maine,” she said. “Access to affordable healthcare and improving our education system are issues that are important to me.”

“Representative McDonald has advocated for and delivered results in Augusta concerning issues critical to Maine’s island communities and fisheries,” said Ryan Fecteau, Assistant Majority Leader, in the release. “She is a strong leader for this part of Maine and we’re fortunate she represents the district in the legislature.”

“Genevieve stood out in her first term in Augusta as a committed, smart, and determined leader for Maine’s islands and coastal communities,” said Hannah Pingree, Director of Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. “She stands up and speaks from first hand experience in the fishing industry about the challenges fishing families are facing and people listen. As a working parent, her perspective on childcare, health care, and public health is passionate and well informed. She listens to islanders and advocates for an affordable and innovative ferry service. Genevieve’s voice and leadership are needed in Augusta!”
