Phyllis Edwards Baker, obituary
CAMDEN — Phyllis Florence Edwards Baker, 94, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, in Rockport, Maine, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on May 25, 1931, in Auburn, Maine, Phyllis was the daughter of Reginald Hilton Edwards and Florence Elizabeth Smith Warren Edwards. She graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn with the Class of 1949 and studied Home Economics at Farmington State Teachers College. After marrying the love of her life, Albert William Baker, whom she met at a New Year's Eve dance, she attended Auburn Business School while Albert served in the military. Together, they shared a lifelong love of dancing, travel, family, and friends.
Phyllis and Albert made their home in the Camden-Rockport area beginning in 1954. Phyllis was a devoted homemaker whose life centered around family, faith, friendship, and community. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) and held numerous leadership positions throughout her years of service, including Worthy Matron, District Deputy Grand Matron for the State of Maine, and Grand Representative to Massachusetts. A faithful member of the Lincolnville United Christian Church (UCC), she was also active in Girl Scouts and many community activities throughout her life.
She was talented in knitting, sewing, baking, and creating a warm and welcoming home. She was especially known for her blueberry pies, sense of style, love of jewelry, and playful competitiveness during cards and games. Family and friends will fondly remember her hugs, kindness, optimism, and favorite expressions including, “Oh my heavenly days!” and “We’ll see about that.”
Phyllis loved spending time with family at Moosehead Lake, traveling, wintering in Florida, lunches with friends, and keeping in close touch with the people she loved. She remained active and social well into her nineties.
Years after Albert’s passing, she was grateful to find companionship with her beloved partner, Fred Heald. More than anything, Phyllis loved her family deeply and unconditionally. Her final wish was for her family to know how much she loved them and that she wanted them to be happy.
She is survived by her daughter, Holly Lane Smith and husband Stuart; her son, William “Bill” Albert Baker and wife Patti; her granddaughters, Katie Lane Rothfield and husband Brette, and Alisa Jean Roman and husband Matthew; and her beloved great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Rose Roman, Haley Lane Roman, Adria Blythe Rothfield, and Gwyneth Arden Rothfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert William Baker; her companion, Fred Heald; her parents, Reginald and Florence Edwards; and her brother, Paul Edwards.
Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth, laughter, friendship, and devotion to family that will live on in all who knew her.
