Paul Gaudreau, obituary
UNION — Paul Gaudreau, 78, born in New London, Connecticut, on October 22, 1947, died in Union on December 27, 2025.
After growing up in Levittown, Pennsylvania, Paul moved west to Aurora, Colorado, with his family while he was in high school. There, he remained deeply involved with the Boy Scouts, eventually earning his Eagle Scout Badge. Paul went on to attend the University of Colorado, taking time to go hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and of course, skiing.
In 1977, Paul and his future wife, Sue Fairer, moved to Union, Maine, where they founded Union Pottery. As the pottery thrived, Paul continued his passion for scouting. Over the years, he led several packs of Cub Scouts before forming a co-ed group of Explorer Scouts. Together, they went camping, lake and rough water canoeing, mountain and rock climbing. Among their many expeditions, he escorted his Explorer Scout troop on a week-long trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, known as the largest national high-adventure base operated by the Boy Scouts of America. The tales the kids told of thunderstorms and bears were truly something else!
Paul was also very passionate about his civic responsibilities. He was a past president of the Union Chamber of Commerce, where he spearheaded the “Now Famous Pie Social”. He was equally dedicated to the Vose Library in Union, beginning with the capital campaign to fund its new building. He served as president of the Vose Library Board and remained an active board member for years. Paul was active in the Town of Union, serving on the budget committee and acting as a Trustee of the William Pullen Fund for many years. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the town and the library were incredibly kind and considerate, ensuring he could continue the activities he loved.
Paul is survived by his wife, Sue Fairer; his siblings, Denise, Carmen, Bob, and Peter, who are scattered across the country; and his two stepdaughters and beloved step-grandchildren.
A memorial tribute to Paul will be held later this spring in his chosen community of Union, Maine. Details will be announced as the weather warms.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to PAWS in Camden, Pope Memorial in Rockland, the Vose Library in Union, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
