Nellie J. Brackett, obituary
ROCKLAND — Nellie J. Brackett, 84, passed peacefully into God’s loving embrace on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Windward Gardens in Camden. She was a woman of quiet strength, boundless generosity, and enduring grace, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a cherished friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born in Rockland on March 19, 1941, Nellie was the daughter of Frank and Alfia (Scinto) Guistin. Raised locally, she came of age in a tight-knit community that shaped her warmth and her deep sense of loyalty to the people she loved.
In 1959, fate, and a pair of roller skates, brought her to the love of her life. Nellie met Gerald ‘Buzzy’ Brackett at the local roller skating rink, and what began as a blossoming friendship grew into a love story that would define her life. The two were married on March 21, 1961, and together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and devotion. Buzzy embraced Nellie’s daughter, Linda Sullivan, as his own, and the family they created was her greatest treasure. The heartbreaking loss of Linda at a young age to breast cancer left a mark on both of them that never fully healed, a grief they carried together, as they did everything else.
Nellie worked hard throughout her life, lending her time and talents to several local manufacturing plants over the years. But she never considered any job her true calling. That, she knew without a doubt, was being a homemaker, wife, and mother. She took immense pride in her home and her family, and they were always her first priority. Her house was a place of warmth and welcome, a reflection of the care she poured into everything she touched.
Her generous spirit extended far beyond the walls of her home. For more than 35 years, Nellie volunteered daily at St. Bernard’s Soup Kitchen, a commitment that spoke volumes about who she was. She had a genuine passion for helping others, and the joy she found in that service was unmistakable. Over those decades, she formed deep and lasting friendships, becoming a beloved fixture in that community of compassion.
A true social butterfly, Nellie filled her life with connection and celebration. She loved gathering with friends and family for weekly card games and bingo nights, and she and Buzzy shared a particular joy in traveling across the state to roller skating rinks, still gliding together with the ease and delight that had brought them together decades before. Dancing was another great love, especially the waltz. Those who watched them on the dance floor often remarked on the effortless grace and deep tenderness between them, two people moving as one. It was, in many ways, a portrait of their entire life together.
Nellie also had an undeniable sense of style. Never with a hair out of place, she was always impeccably dressed, and she delighted in going out to dinner or taking long car rides through the Maine countryside with Buzzy by her side. In so many ways, the simple pleasures were the ones she treasured most.
Nellie J. Brackett leaves behind a legacy written not in grand gestures, but in the quiet, daily acts of love that defined her: a meal shared, a hand held, a stranger fed, a friend made. Her radiance, her beauty, and her warmth will be deeply missed by all who had the joy of knowing her.
Predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Tony and John Gustin; her sister, Frances Volkir; her daughter, Linda Sullivan; and two nieces, Jean Bojanski and Kathy Fors; she is survived by her husband, Gerald ‘Buzzy’ Brackett of Rockland; her nephews, Mark Gustin of Monticello, Mike Gustin and his wife Alison of Owls Head; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 11 a.m., at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 150 Broadway, followed by a reception to celebrate Nellie’s well lived life. She will be laid to rest privately in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Bernard’s’ Catholic Church Soup Kitchen, c/o St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, 7 Union Street, Camden, Maine 04843.
