'The Miraculous from the Material' lecture by Alan Lightman
Event Date
Wednesday, July 08, 2026 - 07:00 pmOn Wednesday, July 8, at 7 p.m., author Alan Lightman will present a lecture entitled “The Miraculous from the Material” in the sanctuary at First Congregational Church, 55 Elm Street, Camden.
Drawing from his book, The Miraculous from the Material (2024), Lightman champions a worldview he calls "spiritual materialism." He argues that one can completely accept that the universe is made entirely of physical matter governed by law, while still deeply experiencing spiritual awe, transcendental connection, and the beauty of nature.
According to a news release, Alan Lightman is an acclaimed American physicist, best-selling author, and social entrepreneur who is widely recognized for bridging the gap between the sciences and the humanities. He was the first professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to receive dual faculty appointments in both science and the humanities. Currently, he serves as a professor of the practice of the humanities at MIT and is a frequent contributing writer for The Atlantic.
This event is free of charge and open to the public.
