PORTLAND — Maine Historical Society invites the public to a free Independence Day celebration, Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., in Portland. The event marks the 250th anniversary of the United States, featuring live musical performances, free admission to the "Pathways to Freedom: Maine Stories of the American Revolution exhibition," and tours of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House.

The celebration is part of MHS's Revolutionary Maine: America at 250 programming, a statewide initiative exploring Maine's role in the American Revolution. Activities include free admission to the Pathways to Freedom exhibition, which features the stories of six historical Mainers during the Revolutionary era with illustrations by Penobscot artist Shannon Sockalexis, and guided tours of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House.
