Mary (Cooney) Harvey, obituary
ROCKLAND — Mary (Cooney) Harvey, 86, died Friday, July 24, 2026. Born in Framingham, Massachusetts, she was a long-time resident of Rockland, a city she grew to love.
Educated in the local schools, Mary graduated from Framingham State College in 1962 with a degree in elementary education. From 1962-1987 she taught children in grades K-3 in Alabama, Massachusetts and Maine, as well as in military dependent schools in Germany and Puerto Rico.
She received a Master’s in Education from Troy State University in 1980 and 8 years later a second degree, a Master’s in Library Science, from the University of Alabama.
In 1989, Mary began her second career as an assistant adult services librarian at the Beverly Public Library in Massachusetts. There she was responsible for most of the in-house printing and directed a series of adult programs for seniors until her retirement in 2001.
She had many passions, including the love of family, books, animals – especially cats – crafting, painting, and sewing. She loved walking the Rockland Harbor trail, thrifting at her favorite Goodwill, and get-togethers with her friends for breakfast pizza.
Mary is survived by 9 nieces and nephews, many grandnieces and grandnephews as well as one great grandnephew! She was much loved, and will be sorely missed.
Mary’s family has chosen to remember her life privately.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. To share a memory or condolence with Mary’s family, please visit their Book of Memories at www.bchfh.com.
