VINALHAVEN — It is with profound love and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Tyler Steven Ward, "Bub/Bubby" of Vinalhaven. Tyler earned his angel wings on July 20, 2026. Though his time with us was far too short, Tyler taught us the true meaning of bravery, resilience, and unconditional love during his 3-year battle with cancer.

Born on September 5, 1996, in Rockport, Maine, Tyler (Bubby) was a bright light who brought immeasurable joy to everyone around him. He had a passion for arts and crafts, music, dancing, swimming, the love of building houses on Minecraft, and eating endless amounts of Chinese food. His smile was infectious and his belly laugh brought happiness to every room. His hugs were filled with sincerity, honesty, and love. His kind, gentle, and honest soul shined through so immensely to all who crossed his path throughout his life.

Attending both Vinalhaven and Oceanside High School, he graduated from Oceanside High School in 2017. Tyler proudly participated in the Special Olympics and served as the “Captain” of the Unified Basketball Team. Tyler was also honored to be crowned Prom King and Homecoming King during his high school career.

Tyler's latest joy and proudest moment was becoming an uncle—the BEST Uncle—welcoming his niece, Paisley Elaine, into the world. Tyler will be forever known for his love of animals, his creativity, and for teaching all those around him what unconditional love truly is and the importance of finding joy in all the little things.

Tyler was predeceased by his Papa, Robert Cross; his Nanny Linda Cross; his aunt Shelia Rivera; his uncles Earl Shepard, and Paul “Pee-Wee” Shepard; and aunt Tina "TT" Stanley.

Tyler is survived by his mother, Wendy Bickford; his father, Steven Ward; his Nanny Rosie Rivera, and Nanny Diane Cross; his stepmom, Danielle Ward; and stepdad, Samuel Bickford. He is also survived by his sisters, Cheyenne Bickford and her fiancé, Skylah Ward and her partner, Ashlyn Ward; his brothers, Cody Ward, Mahsyn Ward; his aunt and uncle Robin and Scott Snell; aunt Sydney Robinson and family; his uncle Stephen Cross and family; his cousins, Ashley, Chelsey, Brandon, Nicholas, Cassandra and their families, as well as many beloved cousins and extended family on all sides.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Pen-Bay Cancer Care team and many oncologists, especially Dr. Andrew Rogers and the nurses at South Portland Cancer Center. Special thanks to the CFT7 team of nurses who didn't just care for Bubby—they loved him and became family—including RN Fiona Osbourne, who became his fiancée, and so many others who made his darkest days brighter with the compassionate and tireless care they provided.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 30, 2026, at 11 a.m., at the Rockland Lodge of Elks, 210 Rankin Street, Rockland. A reception will follow immediately.
