Maine Dept. of Public Safety recognizes National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week
The Maine Department of Public Safety is recognizing National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, April 12–18, 2026, honoring the dedicated professionals who serve as the first point of contact in emergencies.
According to DPS, in a news release, each year, the Department’s three communication centers handle on average more than 130,000 calls for service, placing telecommunicators on the front line of nearly every emergency involving state public safety agencies.
"These highly trained professionals provide calm, critical guidance in moments of crisis and ensure that help reaches those in need as quickly as possible," said the news release.
The Bureau of Emergency Communications operates three regional communication centers in Augusta, Bangor, and Houlton, collectively serving agencies in all 16 counties. These centers support a wide range of state and local public safety agencies and provide emergency medical and fire dispatch instructions to callers in need.
In Augusta, telecommunicators manage a significant volume of statewide coordination, supporting numerous agencies and jurisdictions. In Bangor and Houlton, dispatchers serve large and diverse regions, including rural and remote areas where coordination across multiple agencies is often critical.
“Public safety telecommunicators are the steady voice on the other end of the line during someone’s worst day,” said Commissioner Michael Sauschuck. “Their professionalism, compassion, and ability to manage high-stress situations make them an indispensable part of Maine’s public safety system.”
"The Department of Public Safety extends its sincere gratitude to telecommunicators across Maine for their commitment, skill, and service to the people of Maine," said DPS.
