Sunday, April 19, 2026 - 01:00 pmCAMDEN — A new chapter of service is hoping to be brought forward in the American Legion community as Post 30 moves to reestablish an official American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) unit. Aimed at supporting War Memorial Post 30, the unit will provide a dedicated platform for the families of veterans to serve those who have served the nation, according to Jeff Sukeforth/Post Adjutant, in a news release.
"The American Legion Auxiliary is one of the nation's most prominent patriotic service organizations, focusing on the welfare of veterans, active-duty military, and their families," said Sukeforth, in the release.
An informational meeting will be held April 19, at 1 p.m., at the Legion Post, 91 Pearl Street. Several Maine Auxiliary members, both local and Departmental Officers, will be on hand to provide their guidance and to answer all questions.
"The Legion Auxiliary has been serving, educating and providing to America’s finest—our military for many years," said Sukeforth.
The Auxiliary is made up of male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters and direct and adopted female descendants of members of the American Legion. Some are Veterans themselves.
The Maine Legion Auxiliary operates under the motto "Service, Not Self," and focuses on several key areas of impact:
Veteran Support: Direct assistance to veterans through programs like the Poppy Program, holiday gift shops, and care packages.
Youth Leadership: Hosting ALA DIRIGO State, a premier leadership program for high school juniors to learn about government and patriotism.
Community Projects: Recent initiatives include a donation to Honor Flight Maine enabling veterans to visit memorials in Washington, D.C., at no cost.
Scholarships: Offering various educational opportunities, including the Americanism Essay Contest and several national and department-level scholarships.
All ladies who have a connection to a military member are encouraged to attend to see if they would like to be a part of something very important to our community, the state and nation, said Sukeforth.
No need to rsvp, just show up on April 19 at the Camden Legion Post and join in the informational meeting. Doors open at 1230 p.m., with snacks and drinks available.
