Joseph Hebert Martin, obituary
VINALHAVEN — It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph Hebert Martin. Joseph, 37, of Vinalhaven, Maine, passed away at his home on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Joseph was born on October 12, 1988, in Rockland, Maine, to Sylvia Martin and Donald Campbell.
On December 15, 2009, his beautiful daughter, Alex (Abigail) Martin, was born. His daughter was his whole world, and he loved her with all his heart. Alex loved doing things with her dad like riding around in his truck listening to music, building her playhouse with him, taking boat rides to different islands in his speedboat, going lobstering, four wheeling, deer hunting, plowing snow and ice fishing.
Joe spent most of his life on the water, where he felt most at peace. Whether he was hauling traps, fishing, or cruising around the harbor on his 38 H&H or a small skiff, the sea was where he belonged. He was an avid and well-known fisherman of Vinalhaven, respected for his skill, hard work, and deep knowledge of the water.
Joe had a natural talent for working with his hands, especially when it came to engines and mechanical work. He could often be found with grease on his hands, fixing boats, engines, and just about anything that needed attention. This gift earned him the nickname Vinalhaven’s “Mr. Fix It.” People often joked that if Joe couldn’t fix it, no one could. He was always willing and eager to help anyone, whether it was a small project or something that seemed impossible, and he never hesitated to lend a hand.
Joe also found a loving family within the Oxton household of Timothy, Colette, and their daughters, Ivy and Autumn, who held a special place in his heart.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Alex (Abigail) Martin; his mother, Sylvia Martin; his father, Donald Campbell; his grandmother, Viva Martin; and his cousins, Dallas Martin Jr. and Holly Ross, who were like siblings to Joe.
Joe, like many, faced battles and struggles with quiet strength. His passing is a reminder of how important it is to reach out, check in on one another, and seek help when it is needed. If you or someone you love is struggling, please do not hesitate to ask for help or call for support.
Joe’s presence, kindness, and devotion to those he loved will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the sea he cherished, the work of his hands, and the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date.
