Ellsworth-Downeast Trout Unlimited hosts Eric Frohmberg: aquatic insect behavior
Event Date
Wednesday, February 25, 2026 - 05:30 pmEllsworth-Downeast Trout Unlimited (DETU) hosts Eric Frohmberg for a talk about aquatic insect behavior and how it relates to fly tying and fly fishing techniques.
"Fly Fishing with Behavior, not Latin" will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 5:30 p.m. In person and online: Moore Community Center 125 State St., Ellsworth; and via Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/wQORiBO7Sx2VwDrtJsXteQ
This talk introduces a new way to think about insects that fish eat...
“Rather than focus on identification, focusing on behavior allows you to choose flies and strategies without knowing exactly what is hatching,” said a DETU news release. "Imitating aquatic insects is one of the most important tools in a fly fisher’s bag of tricks."
Eric Frohmberg has studied entomology for...“Well, it is one of those things that I never grew out of,” said the news release. He studied entomology at Kansas State University and Oberlin College before switching directions to Environmental Toxicology. Discovering fly fishing added a new dimension to his interest in entomology, eventually leading to his producing a podcast called Angler's Entomology. In that podcast he aims to make learning about the science of bugs accessible to anglers. He covers the major insect groups and discusses their habits and behaviors that anglers can use when fishing, "or just appreciate for their awesomeness," said the news release. He is also the resident entomologist at Selene's Fly Shop in Gardiner, Maine.
