Janice M. Bradeen, obituary
ROCKLAND — Janice M. Moody Bradeen, 88, of Rockland, Maine, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. Born on December 18, 1936, in Thomaston, Maine, she was the beloved daughter of Karl Moody and Mildred Davis Moody. In October 1976, she married Forest Bradeen and instantly became the mother and grandmother to a growing family.
Janice graduated from Union High School in 1954 and from Husson College in 1958. During college, Janice played basketball and in 1997 was inducted into the Husson College Basketball Hall of Fame.
She dedicated over 15 years to education and later retired from The County Commissioner Office in Rockland.
She was a strong, independent, and spiritual woman who was deeply family oriented. She enjoyed her affiliation and friendships with both the Peoples United Methodist Church, where she was a member, along with the West Rockport Baptist Church where she was baptized. The support and prayers from both were very important to her during her illness.
Janice shared her love of golf, travel, gardening, and living on 7 Tree Pond with her husband, Forest, until he passed in 1997, then she continued to share these passions with other family and friends. From the first time Janice and Forest tried golf, they were hooked. They played frequently, locally in and around New England, and often in North Carolina. Even after Forest passed, she continued her membership at Union Country Club and Rockland Country Club, creating long lasting friendships with other members.
Janice cherished hosting family holidays, making fudge, whoopie pies, and blueberry pies. She always looked forward to the yearly Black Friday shopping sprees she and her daughter Carol went on, always finding perfect gifts for her family. Janice was known for her love of cats, especially hers: Dusty, Samatha, and Tabitha. She was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.
Janice is survived by her loving family: her daughter Carol Bradeen Robinson and son-in-law, Edgar Robinson of Enfield, Connecticut; her son, James Bradeen and daughter-in-law, Joanna Shorey Bradeen of Searsmont, Maine; Keith Szolga, son-in-law of St. Louis, Missouri, her grandchildren, Kelly Robinson Moore (Jeff), Justin Robinson (Colleen), Jamie Bradeen Ames (Shannon), Joshua Bradeen, Cheryl Bradeen Saikley (Jerry), Sandra Bradeen Mieth (Ivan), Nathan Szolga (Caron), and Jared Szolga (Bethany); and 17 great- grandchildren. She’s also survived by her cousin Dick Smith, his wife Claire, and their family in Vermont.
Special thanks to Joanna Schleif and Carol Daum for their loving support during Jan’s long battle with cancer.
She was predeceased by her parents, Karl Moody and Mildred Davis Moody; her husband, Forest Bradeen; her daughter Joanne Bradeen Szolga; and two great grandchildren.
A funeral service to celebrate Janice’s life will be held on Friday, July 25, at 10 a.m., at the People’s United Methodist Church in Union, Maine, with a reception immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or your local cat adoption agency.
