'I Walk Among the Rocks' exhibit at Rockport Library
A show of stone sculptures carved by Midcoast artist Raymond Plotnick will be on exhibit in the Marine Room of the Rockport Public Library from May 2 to June 29. Entitled “I Walk Among the Rocks,” the abstract collection showcases Plotnick’s inclination toward capturing “the echo of natural shapes” in the medium of stone.
“I carve in stone because it refuses to hurry,” said Plotnick, in a Library news release.
Working primarily in Utah alabaster, Vermont marble, and Oregon soapstone, Plotnick is “drawn to rounded edges and inner cavities—places where light and shadow meet.,” said the Library. As for his process, Plotnick says, “I leave some surfaces crisp and others soft, so the hand feels as engaged as the eye. I work intuitively, allowing the material to shape my decisions as the work unfolds.”
The show will feature a number of works, some as tall as 20 inches in height and 2 feet long. Plotnick hopes that his enduring shapes will offer viewers “a moment of stillness — a reminder that in the presence of great age, our modern pace dissolves.”
