LINCOLNVILLE — Heinz Robert Lehmann, 97, of Lincolnville, Maine, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026. He was born on April 10, 1929, in Zofingen, Switzerland, the only child of Walter Lehmann and Lydia Hunziker Lehmann.

Heinz had a love for life that was diverse and “on the go.“ Whether he was sailing on Penobscot Bay or flying across the Atlantic in the Concord, he was always seeking out new experiences and adventures. Not only was Heinz witness to cultures, cuisine and people on six continents; he lived them. Most importantly he cherished sharing it all with his family and friends.

Heinz had a quick wit, a generous heart, and a knack for making everyone smile. He was a lifelong sports fan whether on the pitch, the court, the slopes or in the lounge chair. In his own words, life was “never a dull moment.”

His early years were spent going to school in Zofingen, but no sooner did World War II end, he and his best buddy packed an easel, some paint, and hitchhiked to Paris. The wanderlust began. After completing his military service in the Swiss Air Force and attending business school in Neuchâtel, Heinz landed a job with the prominent commodities trading firm André & Cie. That role took him to the African “Gold Coast”, currently known as Ghana. 

After working there for two years, his return to Switzerland didn’t last long. In 1957, his next assignment would bring him to the USA, New York City. Then, while on home leave participating in his friend’s wedding, he was introduced to Vreni Stäheli, of Goldach, Switzerland. His life changed forever. Heinz and Vreni married in 1958 and soon thereafter they were blessed with two sons, Mark and Thomas.

Heinz and Vreni built their first home in the Long Island suburb of Dix Hills, where they raised their children. During that time, Heinz developed and ran the successful US arm of the Swiss precision manufacturing company, American Laubscher Corp. and Precipart. By now, global travel was routine for Heinz, but in the early 1970’s, while on a family ski trip in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, he met a family from Maine. The families became friends and Maine became a respite of peace and relaxation.

In 1985, his vision of retirement became a reality when they closed on a property near the Ducktrap River, in Lincolnville. It was a beautiful field of wild flowers bordering the ocean, where he and Vreni would build a home to live out their golden years. Not all in life goes as planned; Vreni passed away early in 2005. Despite such a loss, the rhythm of the sea gave him his heart beat. Heinz would become close to nature and find love and joy with his friends and community. 

Not a day would pass without an appreciation for life, of how fortunate his was and that he was blessed to live the independent lifestyle he aspired to. He was an active member of the Lincolnville Improvement Association, the Camden Yacht Club, the MidCoast Forum and the West Bay Rotary. 

Heinz is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Roxanne Lehmann of Sea Cliff, New York, and Thomas and Claudia Lehmann of Rüdlingen, Switzerland. He is also survived by his granddaughters and grandson-in-law Dr. Jennifer Lehmann and Casey Davenport of San Francisco, Crysta Lehmann of Vancouver, Canada, Isabelle Lehmann of Winterthur, Switzerland and Melissa Lehmann of Zurich, Switzerland. He leaves behind a special friend Marianne Braun of Zurich, Switzerland.
