In accordance with a directive of the President, Governor Janet Mills ordered that United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff midnight, and through Saturday, October 16, 2021, in honor of the National Peace Officers' Memorial Service and to pay respect to law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty and their families.

“Earlier this week, we added the name of Maine State Police Detective Ben Campbell to the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Augusta,” said Mills, in a news release. “The observance came just weeks after we lost Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Luke Gross. We have known all too well the loss of Maine law enforcement officers over the last several years, but we also know their courage, strength, and sacrifice in serving and protecting us. Let us pay tribute to those law enforcement officers who have laid down their life in service to our great state.”
