First Friday Community Dance and Contras, Aug. 1
On Friday, August 1, take a spin on the dance floor and let your shoes fly at the First Friday Community Dance & Contras.
The intergenerational program begins at 6 p.m., when the All Comers Band warms up and chooses tunes. The band is open to all ages, instruments, and skill levels; a collection of tunes is posted at belfastflyingshoes.org. Chrissy Fowler leads the easy-to-learn Community Dance led starting at 6:30 p.m. This first hour is great for families, singles, kids, adults, new dancers, and experienced folks who love the joy of simple folk dances and music by dozens of exuberant local musicians.
This month’s 8 p.m., Contra Dance features North Carolina caller Diane Silver with exciting music by Drive Train (Ed Howe on fiddle, Bennett Konesni on guitar, and Stuart Kenney on bass.)
"Diane hails from Asheville, a hotbed of trad dance and music," said Belfast Flying Shoes.
As a dance leader, she’s served on various boards, including her local dance, Old Farmer’s Ball, and the Country Dance & Song Society, a dance and music nonprofit of which BFS is an affiliate member.
"Maine natives Ed and Bennett are joined by Stuart for this trio that propels the dancers across the floor, with whoops, hollers, and a whole lot of fun," said Flying Shoes.
The First Church is at 8 Court Street in Belfast.
Admission is $15-25 for the whole evening. (For just the first hour’s Community Dance, admission is $1 kids/$2 adults.) First Friday FAQ, BFS Community Care Policy, and other info at www.belfastflyingshoes.org
