Cheryl Louise Dugan-Higley, obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Cheryl Louise Dugan-Higley, who died peacefully at her home in Appleton on June 26, 2026, at the age of 77, surrounded by her loved ones.
Cheryl was born on April 12, 1949, in Rockland, Maine, to Mildred Murchison and John Dugan. She grew up alongside her four brothers—John, Henry, Ernie, and Steven Dugan—each of whom held a special place in her heart throughout her life.
At the age of 25, Cheryl made the courageous decision to move to California with her three young children, Lincoln Whitney, Arthur Whitney, and Melissa Maxwell. While working and providing for her family as a single mother, Cheryl attended Chaffey College where she earned a degree in Medical Office Management. She worked tirelessly to provide for her family, raising her children with unwavering strength, determination, and love. Her resilience and sacrifice laid the foundation for the lives they would build, and her devotion to her family remained at the center of everything she did.
Cheryl was married four times throughout her life, but it was with her beloved husband, David Higley, that she found her greatest happiness. Together they made their home in Appleton, where they shared many cherished years until David's passing in 2021.
A woman of remarkable strength and resilience, Cheryl faced life's challenges with courage and determination. Throughout her life, she endured illness with grace and persevered through the heartbreaking loss of her eldest son, Lincoln Whitney. Despite every hardship, Cheryl met each day with an unwavering spirit.
Cheryl found great joy in crafting, especially creating handmade greeting cards. She lovingly made cards for her family and friends, not just for birthdays or holidays, but often for no special occasion at all—simply to let them know they were in her thoughts. These small acts of kindness reflected her generous heart and the love she shared so freely with those around her.
Cheryl's spunky, vibrant personality was truly infectious, filling every room with laughter and joy. She had a playful, mischievous streak and loved getting into a little harmless trouble, especially if it meant making someone smile. Her quick wit, sense of humor, and zest for life left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Cheryl is survived by her two brothers, John and Henry Dugan; her children, Melissa Maxwell and Arthur Whitney; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Her family finds comfort in knowing that the love, laughter, and kindness she shared so freely will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
A celebration of life will be held in September of 2026 with friends and family. More information soon to follow.
