Cedric Willie Long, obituary
ROCKLAND — Cedric W. Long, 93, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Breakwater Commons in Rockland, Maine.
Born in Thomaston, Maine, Cedric was the son of the late Joseph and Rachel Hathorne Long. A standout athlete at Rockland High School, he earned varsity letters in both football and basketball before graduating in 1950. Shortly thereafter, he joined the National Guard and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a diesel repairman. He remained an active member of the National Guard following his military service.
Cedric built a long and respected career as a truck driver, working for companies including Philip Rollings Garage, Maine Coast Seafood, Martin Marietta, Dragon Cement, Paulsen Trucking, and George Hall Construction. His work took him across the state, and he came to know every road in Maine.
After retiring from trucking, Cedric turned his attention to woodworking. He crafted furniture, cabinets, and other items with care and skill. He was also a dedicated gardener who cultivated a large garden at his home. Known for his generosity and industrious spirit, Cedric was always ready to lend a hand to friends and family. His garage was a hub of activity—well-stocked with tools and ongoing projects. He was also a proud member of the American Legion for over 50 years.
Cedric was predeceased by his parents and siblings Betty Harvey and Dean Long.
He is survived by his sister Jill Perry of St. George; children: Gary Long and his wife Debra of North Carolina, Diane Miller of Camden, Cedric Long Jr. of Bangor, Darrell Long and his companion Jan Fish of Rockport, Steven Long and his companion Bernadette Barrows of Camden; 11 grandchildren, as well and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
