Camden Hills field hockey rally falls short

Fri, 09/20/2019 - 10:30am

BREWER — The Camden Hills varsity field hockey team hit the road Thursday, Sept. 19 for a showdown against Brewer that saw the visiting Windjammers rally in the second half down 3-0.

Despite a pair of second half goals from Lulu Lyon, the visitors were unable to secure the victory and fell 3-2 to the Witches.

With the loss, Camden Hills dropped to 1-3-1 on the season.

Lyon scored both goals for the Windjammers in the second half with the first coming at the 21:16 mark and the second coming at the 7:54 mark.

Scoring for Brewer, all in the first half, were Emilie Ireland (20:39) and Janessa Bishop (12:38, 1:12).

Camden Hills recorded two corners, while Brewer had four.

Camden Hills had 11 shots, while Brewer recorded 10.

Camden Hills tallied seven saves, while Brewer tallied nine.

“Brewer had a couple of girls that were tough to contain defensively, and ultimately that hurt us,” said Camden Hills head coach Lindsey Clement. “Starting the second half down by 3 goals is a challenge, but our team rallied together to erase the deficit.”

Clement noted Charlotte Hood played tough defense against Brewer’s upperclassmen attack.

“Her ability to read their plays and intercept their passes made it difficult for the Brewer offense to work together,” said Clement.

For the first time this season, Alyssa Bland moved from defensive back to the Camden Hills forward line.

“Although a stellar defender, Alyssa's offensive control and speed are difficult for opponents to contain,” said Clement.

Meredith Luce had an outstanding offensive second half, Clement said, that included an assist.

“She out-hustled the Brewer defense and successfully advanced the ball into the circle to the other forwards,” said Clement.

Lydon, Sophia Campbell and Ani Reinwand took charge of the possession in the second half, Clement noted.

“Sophia did a great job holding down our midfield and keeping the ball in our offensive end,” said Clement. “Ani's speed and drive earned her some pivotal shots on the goal. Lulu was relentless in the circle, looking for shots until she found the back of the net — twice.”

The Windjammers will take the field once again Saturday, Sept. 21 for a home game against Oxford Hills at 1 p.m.

As previously reported, the Sept. 21 game will be played at Point Lookout in Northport instead of in Rockport.
