Camden Hills, Bangor field hockey fight to 1-1 draw

Fri, 09/07/2018 - 11:15am

BANGOR — After two overtime periods, neither the Camden Hills varsity field hockey nor the Bangor Rams were able to break the 1-1 tie.

Thus, the final score was recorded as a draw sending the Windjammers’ record to 0-2-1.

The Windjammers next game will come when the team hosts Messalonskee at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8.

For Camden Hills, the Windjammers recorded eight corners, nine shots on goal and eight goalie saves. Bangor posted 12 corners, nine shots on goal and eight goalie saves.

Bangor's Gabby Gonzales scored in the first half with 3:58 left. Lulu Lydon, who was assisted by Greta Bishop, scored for Camden Hills with 24:27 left in the second half.

Camden Hills head coach Lindsey Clement had the following to say about the contest:

Having played Brunswick just 24 hours prior, we were not recovered and physically ready for another game — especially against a team as skilled, aggressive, and fast like Bangor. The first half was pretty evenly matched, remaining scoreless until Gabby Gonzales scored with 3:58 left in the first half.

We had two small goals to accomplish going into the game- do not let the opponent out shoot us, and keep our intensity up the entire game.

While we didn't out shoot Bangor (we tied), we kept our intensity and hustle consistent throughout the game. Bangor's intensity wavered, and we took control of the game in the second half.

Our midfield was tired after chasing down Bangor's speedy attack in the first half, but Ashlee McIntosh floated all over the field to squash their breakaways. The only other two girls fast enough to catch Bangor's forwards, were on our front line. Both teams had similar strategies of maintaining an explosive offensive line that could get behind the opponent quickly and effectively.

Lulu Lydon started the second half with a beautiful deflection off of a shot from Greta Bishop. That was the perfect start to the second half, because the team immediately rallied together to give 100%.

Our offense was scrappy as they looked for breakaway opportunities, our midfield scrambled to shut down Bangor's fast offense, and our defense did whatever it took to disallow Bangor shots on goal — it wasn't our best showing of skill, but the effort could not have been better or more unified.

Vicki Balla, one of our freshmen goalies, played extremely well in the cage for us. In both of the overtimes she was faced with multiple 1v1 opportunities from the Bangor offense, and she shut them down every time.

Mackenzie Power played phenomenal defense for us and couldn't have done a better job breaking up Bangor's scoring attempts. Capri Buck and Lexi Tinch played hard in the center of the field to fight for possession, and find open teammates to start our offensive transitions.

Ani Reinwand and Lulu Lydon both led our offense with clean passing and quick breakaways; their hustle and effort were unmatched as they maintained a steady pressure on the Bangor goalie.
